Summer School: “Crash Course on Data Assimilation - Theoretical foundations and advanced applications with focus on ensemble methods”

Sted
The 4-days school aims at PhD-level students and early stage scientists with beginner or no notions of data assimilation intending to apply data assimilation as part of their research. The crash course will cover the basic notions of data assimilation, focusing on ensemble methods, illustrated with real-scale / operational applications and with the aid of practical exercises.
The school is part of the CHESS (Research school on changing climates in the coupled earth system) initiative https://chess.w.uib.no/.
The temporary list of lectures and (tentative) topics is given below:
- Geir Evensen (IRIS & NERSC, Norway): Basic principles of inference and theory of variational and sequential Gaussian analysis, EnKF fundamentals
- Laurent Bertino (NERSC, Norway): Background statistics, spatial covariances, anamorphosis for non Gaussian variables
- Alberto Carrassi (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for chaotic dynamics
- Yan Chen (Tentative, TOTAL, France): Data assimilation for history matching reservoir models
- Svetlana Dubinkina (CWI, Holland): Data assimilation for paleo-climate
- Colin Grudzien (NERSC, Norway): Numerical exercises on dynamical systems
- Remus Hanea (STATOIL, Norway): Data Assimilation for oil reservoirs
- Harrie-Jan Hendricks Franssen (IBG-3, Germany): Data assimilation for hydrology
- Patrick Raanes (IRIS & NERSC, Norway): Numerical exercises on data assimilation
- Annette Samuelsen (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for the ecosystem
- Yiguo Wang (NERSC, Norway): Data assimilation for climate prediction
A preliminary agenda will be made available on this page.
The school has not fees, but the number of participants is limited to 30.
The deadline to apply is March 18th 2018.
REGISTRATION ARE CLOSED
The committee will select the students based on their area of interest and the motivation statement.
Priority will be given to PhD students and early career scientists in the field of data assimilation.
Full or partial financial support will be considered upon request and only limited to 3 students selected by the committee among applicants.
The participants will be encouraged to bring over a poster for presenting their research activities.
If you want to attend, please sign up the form below and fill in all required fields.
The crash-course is organised in conjunction with the 13th International EnKF workshop (http://www.iris.no/enkf/enkf-homepage) that takes place the week after the Crash Course, on May 28-30, 2018 in Bergen, Norway. Participants to the Crash Course on DA are then strongly encouraged to attend the workshop too.
For a list of hotels available in Bergen, please see this site:
